Sally Auger Rising Star Scholarship

In 2011, when our founder and executive director Sally Auger retired, we wanted to honor her commitment to helping Native youth thrive and succeed. The Sally Auger Rising Star Youth Scholarship recognizes the motivation of youth we work with, who are actively working to improve their own lives and the life of their community. Each year a small committee reviews potential applicants and awards $1,000 to help an individual pay for tuition, books, and living expenses while attending college or other post-secondary education. To be eligible, a youth must have participated in the Garden Warrior program for a minimum of two years and be enrolled in a college or vocational training program.

In summer 2012 Dream of Wild Health awarded the first Sally Auger Rising Star Youth Scholarship to Wicahpi Cavanaugh, a three-year Garden Warrior.  Wicahpi was selected for the scholarship because of his maturity, his ability to provide a positive role model for young people in the Garden Warrior  program, and his commitment to getting a college education. He participates in Sundance and powwows, belongs to a drum group, and maintains a healthy lifestyle. He is a tremendously nice person who treats everyone with respect. Wicahpi recently started as a freshman at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. "We are so proud of Wicahpi and the way he has grown in our program," said Diane Wilson, Executive Director at Dream of Wild Health. "He is a wonderful role model for the young people we work with. We want him to know that he has the support of his community around him."
